Your first ski lesson at Samoëns 1600: the three places to recognise

A first lesson at Samoëns usually involves a journey uphill before teaching begins. The village office, gondola departure and instructor’s meeting point are different places. Understanding that geography is more useful than memorising a generic instruction to arrive early.

The village office answers booking questions

ESF’s village office is at 28 place de l’Office du Tourisme. It is a useful address for discussing levels and booking details, but it is not the standard group lesson meeting point. An address copied from the school’s contact page can therefore send a first-time visitor to the wrong part of the morning.

The booking confirmation should identify the actual product and meeting arrangement. This matters particularly for families: children of different ages may be on different programmes, and special products can use their own collection arrangements. Keep each child’s information attached to the relevant booking instead of relying on one general map pin for the whole family.

The normal group meeting point is up at the plateau

ESF places its standard group lesson meeting point in front of Club Piou-Piou at the top of the Grand Massif Express. The lift journey and the walk to the instructor therefore happen before the lesson starts. Equipment fitting, ticket collection and travel from the chalet all belong earlier in the chain.

For a first morning, we would arrange equipment collection separately where possible and save the meeting instructions offline. This gives you time to resolve a boot problem at the shop instead of discovering it beside the lesson flag. The school’s current instructions and your specific confirmation remain the authority if a programme uses a different arrangement.

A locker changes what you carry, not where you meet

Roland Gay Skiset has a storage location on the Plateau des Saix, beside Lou Caboëns. It is worth comparing with valley storage if you expect to take the gondola without carrying skis every day. Availability, access and the equipment that fits inside need confirmation when booking.

After the first lesson, ask what practice area suits the learner and which pass covers it. Staying near the teaching area can make more sense than immediately following confident friends across the domain. The useful measure of the day is whether the learner can repeat a skill comfortably, with enough energy for the return to the chalet, rather than how far the group travelled on the map.

A mixed-ability week in Samoëns: where the group can split and meet

A shared chalet works well when the group can enjoy different ski days and still meet easily afterwards. In Samoëns, the learning area on the plateau, the wider domain and the village offer useful separate anchors. The week does not have to depend on everyone following the same route.

Skiing from Samoëns village: Grand Massif Express and Samoëns 1600

Samoëns is not ski-in, ski-out: the Grand Massif Express gondola carries you from the valley floor to the Samoëns 1600 plateau in about ten minutes, and the beginner lifts start at the top. For winter 2026-27 the lift company lists Samoëns as open from 12 December to 11 April; in holiday weeks, start from Vercland or before 9am to avoid the queue.

Village first or lift first? Choosing a Samoëns ski-chalet location

A chalet can be convenient for restaurants or convenient for the first lift, and sometimes both. In Samoëns, the exact doorway and the equipment arrangement matter more than the word « central ». These local reference points help turn a listing into a realistic morning journey.
