Skiing from Samoëns village: Grand Massif Express and Samoëns 1600

Samoëns is not ski-in, ski-out: the Grand Massif Express gondola carries you from the valley floor to the Samoëns 1600 plateau in about ten minutes, and the beginner lifts start at the top. For winter 2026-27 the lift company lists Samoëns as open from 12 December to 11 April; in holiday weeks, start from Vercland or before 9am to avoid the queue.

How do you get from the village to the snow?

By gondola. The Grand Massif Express leaves the valley floor on the route du Grand Massif, about 1 km from the tourist office, and reaches Samoëns 1600 in roughly ten minutes. The beginner slopes start where you step out, with no stairs.

Its 800-space car park becomes paid from 15 December: last winter, one hour free, then €7 a day (2025-26 rates). Mind the 2.35 m height barrier with a roof box.

You need not carry skis through the village each day. At the gondola base, Xtrême Glisses stores the kit it hires out for free and rents lockers to others; Sports Expériences listed a five-person heated locker at €40 a week with its own hire, €60 otherwise (as displayed on 9 October 2026).

  • Samoëns season 2026-27: 12 December 2026 to 11 April 2027 (lift company dates)
  • Village to slopes: Grand Massif Express, about 10 minutes; Vercland gondola 2 km west
  • Samoëns beginner pass: €30.40 for 4 hours, €33.80 a day (adult, 2026-27)
  • Grand Massif day pass: €63 adult, €50.40 for ages 8 to 14 (2026-27)
  • Under 8 and 75 plus: free day pass at the ticket desk, with proof of age

When is the Grand Massif Express open in 2026-27?

The lift company lists Samoëns as open from 12 December 2026 to 11 April 2027. On 9 October 2026, two tourist-office pages still said 19 December, so check the live page before booking the first week.

Lift hours for 2026-27 are not yet published. Last winter the gondola ticket office opened from 8.30am to 4.30pm, until 6pm on school-holiday Saturdays.

French school holidays fill the slopes: Christmas from 19 December 2026 to 4 January 2027, February from 6 February to 8 March 2027.

Which lift pass does a beginner need?

A first-timer only needs the Samoëns beginner pass: in 2026-27, €30.40 for four hours or €33.80 a day for an adult. It covers two returns on either gondola, four drag lifts and the Damoiseaux and Demoiselles chairlifts. The Oratoire carpet is free.

Confident on blues? The Villages pass (€58.50 a day, 2026-27) adds Les Carroz, Morillon and Sixt; the Grand Massif pass (€63) adds Flaine. Under-8s and over-75s ski free by the day. Each pass needs a €2 Skicard.

Where should beginners start: Samoëns 1600 or Morillon?

Either works. Samoëns 1600 is the quickest from the village: the tourist office calls it one of the largest beginner areas in Haute-Savoie, with seven lifts, a fun zone and a carpet for children’s classes on a gentle plateau.

Morillon Les Esserts suits nervous adults: locals point to its wider, roomier slopes, and its beginner sector leads to Marveline, a green run through the forest (Morillon beginner pass €24.80 a day, 2026-27).

Good to know: use a beginner pass for two or three days, then switch to the Villages pass.

Which ski school, and where do lessons meet?

Three schools teach from the village, and all advertise English-speaking instructors. ESF Samoëns gathers group lessons at Samoëns 1600, in front of the children’s area at the top of the gondola; on 9 October 2026 its site listed six adult mornings, 9.30am to 11.45am, groups of up to ten, at €225.

The 360 school (ESI) runs groups of six to nine; ZigZag, on the Grande Rue, teaches in Samoëns and Morillon. On 9 October 2026, 360's adult page listed four-day group courses from €149 and private lessons from €54 an hour (the page does not say which season); ZigZag shows its prices only in its online booking. Each school’s card below shows its current Google rating and reviews. Lift passes are never included. Club Med’s lessons at Samoëns 1600 come with its own stays.

Where can you hire skis near the gondola?

Xtrême Glisses sits at the foot of the Grand Massif Express, a three-minute walk from the gondola. Its listing on the Samoëns tourist office site (checked 9 October 2026, season not stated) gives adult one-day packs (skis, boots and poles) at €20 (beginner), €25 (intermediate) and €39 (expert), helmets at €3, and free storage for rented equipment. Book online: the shop advertises web discounts that vary with the dates.

How do you dodge the morning queue?

Start from Vercland. In French holiday weeks the Grand Massif Express queue builds early, roughly from 9am to 10.15am, and Snowheads posters who stayed over a February half-term reported waits of about 20 minutes. The Vercland gondola, about 2 km west, has a free car park, though it has filled faster since the Grand Massif Express car park started charging.

Drivers have a third way: the road climbs about 11 km, roughly 16 minutes, to the free Parking des Saix at Samoëns 1600, 517 spaces at the end of the road; from its far end skiers often set off and return on skis. The catch is the Chariande Express, the six-seater from the plateau to Tête des Saix (2,120 m), where peak-week queues are longest from about 9.30am to 10.30am.

The free ski bus suits most village stays: last winter eight lines stopped at the gondola. With a 9.30am holiday lesson, aim for the gondola before 9am.

Which Samoëns ski pass? Start with the lesson area

The right pass depends on where you will ski, not on how many bedrooms your chalet has. For a first week, start with the lesson booking and the intended practice area. Grand Massif publishes different local beginner products alongside the wider passes.

Your first ski lesson at Samoëns 1600: the three places to recognise

A first lesson at Samoëns usually involves a journey uphill before teaching begins. The village office, gondola departure and instructor’s meeting point are different places. Understanding that geography is more useful than memorising a generic instruction to arrive early.
