February half-term 2027 in Samoëns: working around French holidays

February is peak season in Samoëns, because French school holidays run in three staggered zones across four weeks. For 2027, they begin on 6 February and end on 8 March. UK half-term weeks usually fall in mid-February, right in the busiest overlap. Knowing the French dates helps you choose a week and book early.

The French zones for 2027

France splits its winter holidays into three zones. According to the official calendar of the Ministry of Education, zone C, including Paris, is off from 6 to 22 February 2027; zone A, including Lyon and the nearby Alps, from 13 February to 1 March; and zone B from 20 February to 8 March. The dates shown are the last day of school and the day classes resume.

  • Zone C (incl. Paris): 6 to 22 February 2027
  • Zone A (incl. Lyon): 13 February to 1 March 2027
  • Zone B: 20 February to 8 March 2027

Where UK half-term falls

Most English school half-terms fall in mid-February, so they usually overlap with two French zones at once. That week is among the busiest of the season: lift queues at the Grand Massif Express, full ski schools and limited rental stock.

If your school’s dates allow it, the week of 6 February, when only zone C is on holiday, tends to be calmer. Late February and early March can also be quieter in the later part of zone B.

What to book first

In a peak week, the order of booking matters.

  • Accommodation, as soon as dates are fixed.
  • Ski school lessons: group places for children fill early.
  • Equipment rental, with exact sizes.
  • Airport transfers for the Saturday or Sunday change-over.
  • Restaurant tables for any special evening.

Making a busy week easier

Start skiing early: the first hour after the lifts open is the quietest. Have lunch before noon or after 1.30 pm to avoid full mountain restaurants. On the busiest days, consider skiing towards the other resorts of the Grand Massif, away from the main gondola. Keep one rest day in the middle of the week for younger children, and plan it for the day the forecast looks worst. Swimming, sledging or a walk in the village give everyone a break without losing a good snow day.

Good to know: book ESF lessons online as soon as the booking opens for the season: half-term group classes for children are often the first to sell out.

Beginner areas around Samoëns: Samoëns 1600, Morillon 1100 and Sixt compared

First-time skiers do not need the whole Grand Massif. What matters is a gentle, quiet slope, an easy way to get there and somewhere warm nearby. Around Samoëns, three areas are commonly used for lessons and first days: the Plateau des Saix at Samoëns 1600, Les Esserts above Morillon and the beginner sector at Sixt. Here is how they compare.

Your first ski lesson at Samoëns 1600: the three places to recognise

A first lesson at Samoëns usually involves a journey uphill before teaching begins. The village office, gondola departure and instructor’s meeting point are different places. Understanding that geography is more useful than memorising a generic instruction to arrive early.
